Scientists from India and Russia lecture on mathematical modeling of communication systems at IAMR KarRC RAS

Institute of Applied Mathematical Research KarRC RAS is hosting a set of lectures of stochastic modeling of telecommunication systems. Scholars from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-Delhi) are appearing before young scientists from Russia and India as invited professors.
From June 2 to 10, the Institute of Applied Mathematical Research KarRC RAS is hosting a series of lectures for young scientists on mathematical modeling of wireless data transmission systems. These systems are used, in particular, in the Internet and mobile communications networks. The aim of the series is to present the basics of stochastic modeling and the applied aspects of modeling (including next-generation networks), as well as their reliability and energy efficiency features.

Lectures will be delivered by invited professors from India and France: in person – by Professor Selvamuthu Dharamraja and Dr. Raina Raj of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, online – by Dr. Priyanka Kalita from Bhattadev University (Patsala, India) and Dr. Anisha Aggarwal from Telecom SudParis (France). The lecturer from the Russian side is Alexander Rumyantsev, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Head of the Laboratory of Stochastic Modeling of Information, Computing, and Telecommunication Systems (SMICTCS) at the Institute of Applied Mathematical Research KarRC RAS. In an “open mic” format, young scientists participating in the training program presented their research and received feedback from the guests.

– In addition to the substantive part, an important dimension of such events is their informal component, where colleagues can get to know each other and learn more about each other's work. It's the first time we are visited by scientists from the Indian Institute of Technology, and we look forward to productive cooperation now and in the future, – remarked Alexander Rumyantsev.

The institute already has good experience of cooperation with partners from India, in particular, there is a Memorandum of Understanding with the Central University of Kerala and Mahindra University, and a successful RFBR-funded Russia-India project in the field of stochastic modeling has been implemented.


Learners at a lecture

The audience consists of young scientists, senior-, Master's- and doctoral students, and novice researchers from educational and scientific organizations in India, KarRC RAS, and Petrozavodsk State University. The latter are represented by an expanded group of participants of the weekly workshop “Probabilistic Models of Communication Systems,” which is held under the guidance of Professor Evsey Morozov at IAMR KarRC RAS.

This series of lectures is included in the framework of SMARTY events organized by the SMICTCS Laboratory IAMR KarRC RAS. The central event is the international workshop held at the Institute biennially. It gathers scientists from different countries, working on theoretical, algorithmic and methodological aspects of the queuing theory and applied probability theory. The next SMARTY workshop is scheduled for 2026, and in August 2025 the SMARTY Youth Camp 2025 will take place.

A successful introduction: the zander has settled down in Lake Sundozero and continues to spread

Scientists of the Institute of Biology KarRC RAS have published the results of long-term observations over the population of the zander (or pikeperch) introduced to Lake Sundozero more than a half-century ago. They confirm the species has become naturalized. Maintaining the population requires regulation of harvesting, protection during spawning, and tending of spawning grounds.

Ice-related phenomena on rivers emptying into the White Sea now last three weeks less than 60 years before

Ice on northern rivers now forms later while ice-off occurs earlier. Karelian scientists confirmed this having analyzed 64 years of marine and meteorological data from the estuaries of rivers draining into the White Sea along its western coast. Climate change has bit three weeks off the ice-covered period on these rivers. The reductions have been the most significant in the last 30 years, aligning with global warming trends in Arctic water bodies.

Citizen science and web technologies help researchers study insects of Karelia

More than 30 insect species not encountered in Karelia previously have been revealed by entomologists from KarRC RAS during their expeditions and using data communicated by active participants of the iNaturalist portal – an open platform for collecting biodiversity data.
