Posseidon research vessel is back from this season’s first integrated expedition

Employees of the Northern Water Problems Institute KarRC RAS completed an expedition around Lake Onego on board the Posseidon research vessel. The expedition covered 19 sites in bays, Central Onego, and Kizhi Skerries region. Scientists have sampled water for chemical and biological analyses.
On June 2–7, the first integrated expedition of this field season was conducted aboard the Posseidon research vessel. Surveys were implemented by employees from three laboratories of the Northern Water Problems Institute KarRC RAS: Hydrobiology, Hydrophysics, and Hydrochemistry and Hydrogeology. On the first day of the expedition, water physicists lifted a stand-alone station — a thermistor chain deployed in November 2024 — to collect data from sensors and replace the battery.

In view of the anthropogenic impact on Lake Onego in the context of climate warming, it is necessary to continuously monitor its ecosystems. The main tasks within the integrated study were carried out by hydrobiologists and hydrochemists. During the trip, scientists visited 19 monitoring sites located in Petrozavodsk Bay, Lizhma Bay, Bolshoye Onego Bay, Central Onego, and the Kizhi Skerries. Special attention was paid to Kondopoga Bay, which is experiencing heavy pressure from the pulp and paper mill and trout farms.

Hydrophysical surveying

Researchers collected water samples for hydrochemical analysis, which estimates the amount of suspended solids, phosphorus, carbon dioxide, oxygen, heavy metals, oil products, and other indicators. Also, microbiological analysis of the samples will be performed: chlorophyll a, phyto- and zooplankton will be studied.

– We managed to fulfill all the planned work, including collecting so-called “first day samples,” which must be analyzed within 24 hours. To do this, the samples had to be sent to the laboratory by car immediately after collection, – informed Anastasiia Sidorova, Head of Hydrobiology Laboratory of the Northern Water Problems Institute KarRC RAS.

Sampling in process

The next stage of the study will be laboratory analysis of the rest of the samples and processing of the results.

A successful introduction: the zander has settled down in Lake Sundozero and continues to spread

Scientists of the Institute of Biology KarRC RAS have published the results of long-term observations over the population of the zander (or pikeperch) introduced to Lake Sundozero more than a half-century ago. They confirm the species has become naturalized. Maintaining the population requires regulation of harvesting, protection during spawning, and tending of spawning grounds.

Ice-related phenomena on rivers emptying into the White Sea now last three weeks less than 60 years before

Ice on northern rivers now forms later while ice-off occurs earlier. Karelian scientists confirmed this having analyzed 64 years of marine and meteorological data from the estuaries of rivers draining into the White Sea along its western coast. Climate change has bit three weeks off the ice-covered period on these rivers. The reductions have been the most significant in the last 30 years, aligning with global warming trends in Arctic water bodies.

Citizen science and web technologies help researchers study insects of Karelia

More than 30 insect species not encountered in Karelia previously have been revealed by entomologists from KarRC RAS during their expeditions and using data communicated by active participants of the iNaturalist portal – an open platform for collecting biodiversity data.
